Why do we celebrate International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8, every year. This day is a reminder of the historic journey that women have taken to better their lives and claim equal space and human rights as men. This day is celebrated with greater enthusiasm and valor across the Global world. This day glorifies womanhood and recognizes their achievements in various social, cultural, educational, and political fields.

Historical Context-

This Global celebration took place for the first time on March 8, 1911. In many countries, this day is celebrated as a public holiday. It was on this day that women in Soviet Russia gained the right to vote in 1977. Also, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)  invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace in 1977.

Importance of Women in Society-

Women are the pillar of our society and this pillar needs to be strengthened to build a strong architecture further.  She plays a dominant role in a family, society, country, and in the world. She also plays various roles as a mother, sister, daughter, teacher, mentor, leader, etc. She is a nature that’s why she is regarded as next to God.

Dignity and Pride are her real Jewel.”

Women’s Demand-

Women demand gender equality, equal opportunities, equal remuneration as men. She wants an unbiased atmosphere to grow and develop. She wants respect and dignity in society. During ancient times, women are not allowed to pursue higher education, she only resides inside the windowpane and were ordered to do only household chores and care for their children.

Today, the world is changing at a faster pace and women are making a revolutionary change in this modern world. She wants to promote a gender equal world which is free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination, a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive, and where difference is valued and celebrated.

While a lot has been achieved on many fronts, but the inclusivity of women, especially those in the lower echelons of society, is still a work in progress.

Qualities of Women-

Qualities of women include- A woman has sympathy, empathy, compassion towards needy and deprived persons of the society, care and love for their family members, and patriotic feeling for their country. She has a sense of gratitude, kindness, intelligence, humor, sensitivity, and trustworthiness. She is honest, independent, genuine, confident, smart, admirable, a mixture of the beauty of heart and mind. She is always ready to compromise in harsh situations. 

“Don’t think about making women fit the world-

think about making the world fit women.”

Famous Women Powers of the World-

A number of female activists fought against the orthodox notion of society and bring a meaningful change in the Global world. Among them- 

Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate is a symbol of feminism. She campaigned for girls’ education, demand for their rights, and respect in society. Malala was shot in the head by Taliban terrorists in Pakistan for her campaign for the education of girls.

Jacinda Arden, a New Zealand Prime Minister and a politician, is the world’s youngest female ‘Head of the Government’ who is running her country successfully and progressively. she is the best example of women’s leadership skills. Similarly, Sheikh Hasina Wazid, a Bangladeshi Politician and Prime Minister is a perfect match for female leadership. She is the longest-serving PM in the history of Bangladesh.

Angela Merkel, former German Chancellor famous for her leadership skill and problem solving approach. She served as the senior leader in G7 meetings. She has excellent skills in diplomatic matters. She won the title of being the world’s most powerful woman.

Serena William is an American Tennis player famous for her playing skill. She held the world’s number 1 ranking. She completed her career of  ‘Golden Slam’ by winning the 2012 Olympics.

 A number of Women Entrepreneurs contribute to the economic development of their country. Such as Sudha Krishnamurthy Infosys Chairperson and a writer, Falguni Nayar an Indian businesswoman, Indra Nooyi former Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, etc.

All these prove that if a woman got an opportunity she can do anything and can bring a great change in society. Women are effective and powerful leaders and change-makers. Their participation and leadership can result in a more effective and sustainable future.

and I think that we are gorgeous no matter what size we are.”
