Introduction- Afforestation refers to the process of planting trees on barren land. It helps in the retention of soils from heavy rainfall. Forests shield the soil from the sun’s rays. Without trees, even the richest soil may soon become unproductive. Once the mountain slopes of India were covered with magnificent forests. They were cut down to provide land for mankind. From trees, we get coal, building materials valuable drugs, gums, dyes and items of food. But above all these, trees purify the air and enrich the soil. they protect us from extreme heat and cold. Trees help conserve soil and water. They also provide oxygen and recreation for vacationists.

Importance of Soil- Oxygen is the prime need of our life. We inhale oxygen when we breathe and exhale carbon- dioxide. Trees take it and convert it into oxygen again. Thus the cycle continues. Trees also cause rain. They prevent the soil from being washed away. We get food, fruits, timber, and medicines from forests. The Paper industry, match industry, and rubber industry depend on forests. They give cool shade to rest in the hot season. They provide shelter to wild animals like lions, tigers, bears, rhinos, etc.

Steps in Conservation of Forests-

  • The Forest Conservation Act passed by the Central Government in 1980 is a legal framework. According to it, the permission of the Central Government is necessary for forest areas to be changed for non-forestry use. 
  • The Waste Land Development Board may build up a certain buffer area which may give more protection to the  forests. Gas can be distributed to the persons as a substitute of fuel. 
  • Experts have introduced new ideas like high-yielding forestry. Our forests can survive if forestry looks to this goal of national development. New forest should be planned where there is space in old forests, new trees must be planted. In spite of the need of land for habitation, crops, railways, roadways, and industry, some land must be found. More men and women should be interested in forestry. Forest college should open its doors to students from all fields of life.

The onus is up to us to conserve our Earth’s environment and protect it from global challenges of climate change. Afforestation must be our main aim. It is the duty of the government and the people to preserve the forest’s wealth. Our government has started the festival of Van Mahotsav or the Forest Festival. There is also a Forest Research Institute to monitor our forest. There is a need for many more
