Introduction-

The inundation of lands with water is flooding. Floods occur when there is a continuous rise in the river water. It is a natural calamity. Floods are very common in India. During the rainy season, we learn from newspapers the news about the great damage done by rivers in flood in many parts of the country.  It caused a great loss of life and property.

Causes of Flood-

Floods are generally the result of continuous and heavy rainfall. Sometimes layers of snow on the mountains melt causing floods in the mountainous region. Sometimes flood is caused by a crack in any wall of a dam or because of the overflow of the dam. Cloudburst is also another reason for the flood. The water flows with a great noise during such a situation.

This year due to cloud bursts and continuous rainfall for many days raised the level of water in the rivers of Ganga and Yamuna. The rising level of water crossed the danger mark and entered into the households of many cities and villages and inundated the farmlands of the farmers. 

The Destructive Effect of the flood-

  • Flood causes a great loss of human life and property.
  • It damages the crops of the farmers, uprooted the trees, wash the houses, drowned the cattle, blocks the roads and highways which interrupts transportation.
  • Floods cross the storage capacity of dams resulting in the overflowing of water.
  • The people become helpless and unable to fulfill their daily necessities.
  • It leads to soil erosion and destruction, reduces the fertility of the soil. 

Steps to Control Rising Flood-

  • To mitigate the evils of floods, big tanks and canals should be dug out. Big dams should be constructed to store the water of the flooded river.
  • The use of modern technology must be practiced to alert the people before the rising of floods.
  • Ensure the presence of a disaster management relief team along with the shore of flooded rivers. 
  • People should be trained to serve in such calamities. They should be taught swimming and rowing. 
  • Hospitals and other health facilities must be installed near the affected areas. 
  • Building of relief camps for the flood-affected population to ensure the safety of their lives.

Conclusion-

Natural calamities are not in the hands of people. However, we can take possible steps to mitigate the effect. The government is paying every possible attention to the problem of flood control. The knowledge of modern science and technology should be used for controlling floods.
