INTRODUCTION-

CHILDREN ARE THE FLOWERS OF OUR NATIONAL GARDEN,

PROTECT THEM FROM WHITHERING AWAY,

GIVE THEM CHANCE TO STUDY,

GIVE THEM WINGS TO FLY,

THEIR TIME IS FOR PLAYING ;

NOT FOR STRUGGLING WITH TOOLS AND TEACUPS,

     Child labour means any work done by the children to earn money. The International Labour Organization (ILO) defines child labour as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. They earn at cost of their physical, mental, and social development. It is their circumstances which force them to hard labour. They have to earn their livelihood, stopping their mental development. Child labour is a global problem. It is more common in underdeveloped countries. By and large, it is a problem of poor and destitute families. There are families where parents cannot afford education to their children. In these families children have to help their parents in earning money. Child labour spoils the future of children.

CAUSES OF CHILD LABOUR-

There are several causes of child labour. Children are engaged in various works to increase the income of their families. People get them engaged to reduce the labour cost of the production. They are engaged as domestic aids because children are less doubtful about dishonesty. They are less liable to misbehave or be violent. Many children take up the job just because of the non-availability of schools in their areas. Instead of sitting idle, their parents prefer to send them to work. Illiteracy and ignorance of parents is also an important factor.

These parents do no consider child labour as an evil. Child labourers have to work more than adult workers. Children are exploited by their employers. The problem of child labour in India is the result of traditional attitude, urbanization, industrialization, migration, lack of education etc. However, extreme poverty is the main cause of child labour. According to the UNICEF, India is said to have the largest number of world’s working children.

Since the biggest cause behind child labour is poverty. So it cannot be completely eradicated from the society unless its root causes are redressed. The general improvement in socio-economic conditions of people is a must. Only then it can be strictly banned. Childhood is the best time to develop spiritual, intellectual, and emotional powers and abilities. Therefore, we should contribute in providing better environment and facilities to these children.

CHILD LABOUR IS A CRIME-

Child labour is illegal. The law in India says that any children below the age of 14 can not be employed either in factory or office or restaurant. India’s international business has been severely affected in many cases. Child labour violates human rights. Still, it is used in manufacturing and packaging. In a large number of cases of export of ready-made garments and other items from India, It has been rejected on the grounds of child labour being used. In India child labour is frequently used in various places of production and services viz. small scale industry, firecrackers making, restaurant service, domestic aid, shopkeeper’s assistant, stone breaking, book b9nding forestry, fishing, transport, garages, etc. In India working children are also self-employed as newspaper boys, milk boys, shoeshine boys, ragpickers, rickshaw pullers, etc.

ITS BAD RESULTS-

In case of child labour, a nation suffers net loss of their capacity as matured adults. Children are the future assets of the nation. It’s our duty to make their future bright. Child labour debars a nation from having creative minds it lowers the literacy rate of the nation. Child labour destroys the image of a nation. It hinders overall progress of a nation. It is a socio-economic problem.

HOW TO COMBAT AGAINST CHILD LABOUR-

Eradication of child labour is possible and within our reach, only if along with the state, corporates and society at large dispose of their responsibilities and respect the constitutional and universal rights of the children. By creating awareness about the importance of Right to education we can ensure their better future ahead.

CONCLUSION-

The children of today are the futures of tomorrow. Every child has the right to enjoy his childhood. We should get an inspiration from Kailash Satyarthi. He has greatly contributed to children’s rights and has a global face against child labour. He launched the ‘Bachpan Bachao Andolan’ in 1980. Through this movement, he has protected the rights of more than 83,000 children from 144 countries. For his work, he has received many national and international honours and awards. In October 2014 he was awarded with Noble Prize of 2014. Thus the conditions of children remains a cause of concern that needs to be addressed urgently.
