essay on water conservation

Introduction-

Rising population, growing industrialization, and agriculture have pushed upon the demand for water. Efforts have been made to collect water by building dams and reservoirs and digging wells. Some countries have also tried to recycle and desalinate (remove salt) water. Due to this heavily growing demand for water, water conservation has become the need of the day. The need for water conservation was felt even in ancient times. That’s why our ancient religious and historical texts and epics give a good insight into the water storage and conservation systems that prevailed in those days.

Need for Water Conservation-

Over-exploitation of groundwater is a serious problem in India. India is the largest groundwater user in the world. It uses for more than a quarter of the total global usage. Around 60% of irrigated agriculture and 85% of drinking water supply rely on it. Yet at least 29% of ground water-blocks in the country are under threat due to extensive use according to a 2004 assessment, states the World Bank Report.

Reasons for overuse of groundwater-

Economic subsidies are the main reason behind the overuse of groundwater in India. Prolonged subsidies in the use of electricity has meant that it is cheap to pump groundwater for agriculture and other purposes. Poor public water delivery system has also made groundwater use much more reliable. A large number of people are using wells in India.

Methods of Conservation of Water-

  • Rainwater Harvesting-

Groundwater recharging by harvesting rainwater is gaining importance in many cities. In ancient times, houses in parts of western Rajasthan were built so that each house had a rooftop water harvesting system. Rainwater from these rooftops was directed into underground tanks. This system can be seen even today in all the forts, palaces, and houses of the region.

Underground pipes and tunnels to maintain the flow of water up to distant places are still in function at Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh, at Golconda and Bijapur in Karnataka, and at Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

  •  Other Methods-

For water conservation, maximum utilization of water is very important. There are a few steps to ensure the conservation of water:

(i) We should use only the amount we actually need.

(ii) We should make sure that our home is leak-free, leaking pipes means loss of water.

(iii) We should not leave the tap running while brushing our teeth, soaping our feet or hands.

(iv) When washing our vehicles, we should use water in the bucket, not directly through pipe.

(v) We should not throw away water after it is used for washing vegetables, rice,  dals. It can be used to water plants.

Way Forward-

The shortage of water is a very serious problem. And conservation of water is a very serious solution to this problem. The most important step in the direction of solving this problem is to change people’s attitudes and habits. So far as the use of all we need to create awareness to water it for granted. We feel that it costs nothing. First of all, we need to create awareness of water conservation among people. We should not waste water. We should promote water conservation and find out new ways to conserve water. Rainwater harvesting system should be made compulsory in each house.   People can have tanks in their houses to store rainwater which can be used for several purposes as cleaning floors, washing clothes and watering plants, etc.

Protection of forests is also very necessary. Protecting forests means protecting water catchments capacity. In ancient India, people worshipped water bodies.

Conclusion of Essay on Water Conservation-

In order to make our Earth habitable and sustainable in the long term, our mission is to conserve water resources. Then only we can imagine a better life because life depends on water and water conservation depends on us. So let’s save every drop of water.
